Database Operations Specialist (Remote/Information Systems Specialist 7)

We have an exciting need for a Database Operations Specialist (Information Systems Specialist 7) with our Enterprise Services unit at the Oregon Department of Education.
 
Our Database Operations Specialist plays an important role in our organization. It allows for flexibility and creativity in solving unique issues that arise in our various systems.

This position works in a small, but mighty, unit of four, which is housed in a larger development IT team of over 20 developers. Sharing and collaborating is engrained within our team. We manage over 100 home grown applications that we maintain and enhance to meet the needs of our customers. We have over 100 databases that ODE manages and maintains. This position will help manage various tasks with our databases from make sure they are running at optimal speed to making sure that Extract Transform and Load (ETLs) are running smoothly to optimizing procedures for better performance.
 
This position has the possibility to be primarily remote.

As our Database Operations Specialist, you will maintain information technology operations (data/application resources) for the Department of Education. This includes monitoring existing systems and processes, scheduling and rescheduling jobs based on operational needs; performing routine maintenance tasks on databases such as rebuilding indexes; perform upgrades to database software i.e., patches and installations; perform database optimization and tuning tasks; assist with restoration of operations following system failures; maintain system documentation of complex data processing systems and follow roll out processes ensuring successful code deployments.
Typical duties include:

  • Database maintenance
  • SQL performance review
  • Working through the ticket log including projects, fixes, and/or enhancements

What are we looking for?
Candidates with a minimum of:
Six (6) years of information systems experience in computer science, network, database operations;
OR
An Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
OR
Completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related field and four (4) years of information systems experience in computer science, network, database operations
OR
A Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field AND two (2) years of information systems experience in computer science, network, database operations
OR
A Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field may substitute for all of the above.
Candidates who are the most competitive will possess a compelling combination of the following background, skills, and experience:
  • Database design, construction, security and maintenance
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL diagnostics
  • General understanding of Network operations
  • Experience with IDERA
  • Experience with tracing and SQL profiling
  • General knowledge of Windows server
  • Experience with Microsoft Team Foundation Server
  • Experience diagnosing SQL server system and query performance issues
  • Experience with DOS, PowerShell
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Experience monitoring and reviewing logs
