The purpose of this internship is to provide the intern with macro-focused experience in the field of social work, investigating social problems and implementing interventions to make a positive change in the asylum seeking and refugee community. The intern will gain professional experience in community outreach and organizing, resource navigation, advocacy, program development, data collection, mental health prevention and education strategies.
 
The intern will work on assigned projects related to improving the quality of life of asylum seekers by reducing barriers to access to needed mental health and basic services and creating innovative programming aimed at increasing their healing and upward socio-economic mobility.
This position is unpaid and will support the Los Angeles area, and may be performed remotely. A computer and internet connection are required for this position. People of color, women, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBT community are encouraged to apply.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage with community partners to mobilize on issues and needs, secure resources and develop services and strategies that enhance client’s well-being.
  • Assists with various administrative tasks to ensure the coordination and completion of all segments of the assigned project and goals under the supervision of Human Rights First Social Worker.
  • Assist in the creation of mental health and overall well-being workshop series, assist in event coordination.
  • Develop culturally responsive educational materials for clients in topics related to emotional well-being.
  • Intern will provide case management services to 1-2 clients depending on previous experience.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to work at both the community and system level with families impacted by the immigration system.
  • Interest in learning about community-based approaches and working with individuals and/or families from many cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Passion for advocating, protecting, and improving the quality of life of migrants.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations and survivors of trauma
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat) or similar design tools.
  • Fluent in written and spoken language, preferred native Spanish speaker.
  • Be able to adhere to professional codes of ethics and advance the social work principles of social and economic justice
REQUIRED EDUCATION: Last year of Bachelor or first year Masters level in social work interested in a combination of macro and micro social work filed.
COMPENSATION : Unpaid
START DATE: September 8, 2021
TIME COMMITMENT: 30-35 hours per week minimum (full-time position). Internship will run until December 10, 2021.
