Intern-Equity and Inclusion

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is one of the nation’s leading nonprofits working on public policy issues affecting low-income families and individuals. It has a national reputation for conducting rigorous research and analysis, developing policy ideas and strategies, shaping a broad array of policy debates at the federal and state levels, and influencing policy outcomes. It works on budget and tax policy, health care, and a range of programs important to low-income people. The Center’s funding comes from private foundations and individuals.

The Center has an opening for a summer intern to work with the Senior Director and Counselor, Equity and Inclusion, who leads the organization’s efforts to develop and implement policies and practices to build a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable organization in fulfillment of the Center’s mission and values. At a high level this work entails creating opportunities to expand staff capacity, supporting implementation of new policies and organizational practices, creating organization accountability tools and strategies, and developing systems to track progress towards stated goals.

Additionally, the Senior Director and Counselor, Equity and Inclusion coordinates the Center’s State Policy Fellowship program, a two-year fellowship opportunity designed to expand the diversity of voices that speak with authority in state policy debates. The program identifies highly motivated candidates – with particular attention to candidates having experience with communities that are underrepresented in state policy debates – with a demonstrated interest in working on public policies that affect low-income and diverse communities and have implications for racial equity.

Responsibilities

The intern will report to the Senior Director and Counselor, Equity and Inclusion. Responsibilities will be varied and will include supporting an array of projects related to the organization’s equity and inclusion work and the Fellowship program.

Equity & Inclusion
  • Provide programmatic and logistical support to the Equity and Inclusion Working Group
  • Help to coordinate, organize, and staff organizational meetings regarding equity and inclusion
  • Provide programmatic and logistical support to the Senior Director and Counselor, Equity and Inclusion in working with specific departments or teams within the organization
  • Participate and take notes in meetings involving external partners and advocates engaged in equity and inclusion efforts

State Policy Fellowship Program
  • Organize and provide logistical support for monthly webinars and other fellowship programming
  • Provide support in collecting information relevant for grant reports or other funder materials
  • Assist with programmatic and logistical planning for in-person convenings such as Fellows orientation and IMPACT pre-meeting
  • Provide logistical support during the recruitment and hiring process
  • Show initiative and propose new ways to coordinate and streamline the work

Qualifications
  • Highly organized, attentive to detail, and able to manage multiple tasks for different projects/supervisors (often on a time-sensitive basis)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to reducing poverty and advancing racial equity
  • Ability to effectively work across cultural difference
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in Microsoft Office productivity applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • This internship position is open to current undergraduate and graduate students (including law), as well as recent graduates

Position Type: Paid Internship. Full time (40 hours/week)
Start Date:  Strong Preference for an intern who can start immediately and work through mid-August.   Also open to candidates who can start May 26 or June 1.
