STAR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health (GH) Bureau. Its purpose is twofold: (1) Through individual fellowships, STAR will help strengthen the capacity of diverse American and low-and-middle-income country (LMIC) health professionals at all levels to make innovative contributions to global health (GH); and (2) STAR will create ground-breaking opportunities for both US and LMIC GH academic institutions and other groups, including professional associations, to create systems for open-access knowledge sharing, resulting in effective partnerships. STAR’s individual and institutional participants are contributing to the development of self-sustaining systems and tools that will produce global citizens with the full spectrum of relevant health competencies. STAR is managed by the Public Health Institute and implemented in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH).
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Background:
The U.S. President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) is an interagency initiative led by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented together with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Malaria Division under the Office of Infectious Diseases in USAID's Bureau for Global Health leads PMI. Under the PMI strategy for 2015-2020, the U.S. Government's goal is to work with PMI-supported countries and partners to further reduce malaria deaths and substantially decrease malaria morbidity, towards the long-term goal of elimination. The PMI Supply Chain Team is responsible for the procurement of all non-Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) commodities as well as providing supply chain technical assistance within PMI.
Introduction:
The Malaria Supply Chain Analytics Intern (Intern) will primarily assist the PMI Supply Chain Team in providing support, particularly in the area of data analysis and visualization, for a large, complex, multi-country supply chain program (Global Health Supply Chain Program) that procures non-IRS malaria commodities (insecticide-treated nets, antimalarial treatments, intermittent preventative treatment for pregnant women, rapid diagnostic tests and other related pharmaceuticals) as well as provides technical assistance for strengthening supply chain systems. The Intern will work with the Supply Chain Team and the Data Integration Team on combining malaria data across technical areas and organizations. In addition, the Intern will assist the Supply Chain Team by contributing to team operations such as participating in technical reviews of Malaria Operational Plans (MOPs), analyzing/visualizing past supply chain data, and offering support as needed in the areas of monitoring and evaluation and management information systems.
Reporting structure:
The Intern will work closely with the Malaria Technical Advisor as well as the PMI Supply Chain Team and receive technical guidance from the Malaria Division Chief who will serve as his/her onsite manager.
OUTCOMES
Internship Output/Deliverable:
By the end of the internship, the Intern will have developed supply chain data visualizations for PMI’s quarterly report, visualizations that combine supply chain data with other malaria data and other routine visualizations as defined by the PMI Supply Chain team.
Essential Duties:
• Provide support to the PMI Supply Chain Team on tasks such as analyzing/visualizing malaria supply chain data and responding to malaria supply chain data questions.
• Support malaria data integration and visualization from a variety of malaria data sources, including but not limited to working with stakeholders such as The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
• Participate in technical management meetings with implementing partners, PMI technical team meetings, supply chain technical working group(s) discussions, and program-related events to better understand project management and technical concepts.
• Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern's own interests.
Anticipated learning outcomes:
All STAR interns will participate in learning activities (*required 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:
· Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease.
· Gain exposure to Malaria control best practices and data analysis and visualization through global health programming.
· Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
· Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor.
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Required:
• Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months.
• Competency in visualization software such as Tableau.
• Strong data manipulation and analysis skills in Excel.
• Experience in connecting data from multiple sources and technical areas for comprehensive analysis and visualization.
• Demonstrated interest in international development and global health issues.
• Ability to serve as a motivated self-starter with excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks.
• US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
Additional skills (preferred):
• Experience working on malaria and/or other health programs in developing countries, ideally in Africa.
• Educational background in mathematics, information technology, data science or engineering.
