Strengths
  • Aliento site with Spanish speaking supervisor, this site prefers Spanish speaking applicants
  • Agency provides training in addition to supervision, including training on topics such as: loss and grief , play therapy, trauma training, crisis intervention, group training, etc.
  • No additional costs/fees for training/supervision
  • Emphasis on cultural sensitivity
  • Supervisor was always available for supervision/consultation and was extremely supportive
  • Supervision in Spanish is available
  • Flexibility with school schedule to complete hours.
  • Trainings were interesting and helpful (e.g. suicide, immigration, workshops on EMDR)
  • Provided training on various topics as well as emphasized the importance of culture sensitivity and responsiveness with clients and their families
  • Trainings involved grief, engaging with lgbtqia+ community, immigration, acculturation, EMDR, and suicide
  • Shadowing was also done during training prior to beginning to see clients (i.e. listening/learning how to make calls to DCFS, sitting in on a session)
  • There is also an additional therapist on site for consultation/support, if at rare times, supervisor was not on site or unavailable.
  • Clinical Director of mental health is understanding, flexible, and maintains open with communication with trainees for concerns/questions.

Challenges
  • Not many resources for trainees such as interactive games, arts and crafts, etc. Trainees could buy what they needed and be reimbursed
  • Parking was difficult depending on campus
  • Each site may have different preferences of documentation based on supervisor.
  • Site does not currently engage in tele-health, however, supervisor was available and willing to continue helping with accruing client advocacy hours.
