Internship Overview

The main objective of the Intern, Energy Transition, is to support the Energy & Mining Team’s just transition policy and advocacy goals. This support may include specific priority projects related to our energy transition work and more general projects that support the team’s broader oil and gas work. This position supports TWS’s efforts to realize a just transition away from reliance on industrial natural resource extraction by supporting a data-driven approach to more effectively brand and describe our decoupling work. This position will impact the Energy & Mining Team’s energy transition policy and advocacy goals by supporting efforts to better articulate and describe our “decoupling” policy platform--or the replacement of volatile annual direct federal payments from coal, oil, and gas extraction with a new model to capture and save fossil fuel revenue and provide permanent distributions directly to communities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the energy and mining team’s priorities related to both energy transition and oil and gas issues more broadly.
  • Plan and prepare focus groups by recruiting participants from a preselected target audience, selecting a platform either online or in person, and preparing materials.
  • Support efforts to ensure recording and reporting systems are in place and working effectively. Support focus group analysis and reporting by reviewing transcripts, notes, and recordings, and summarizing findings.
  • Collaborate with Just Transition Manager on updating and drafting written materials, including white papers, fact sheets, or other advocacy products as needed to reflect the findings of the focus groups.
  • Support coalition efforts to build support for just transition policies by tracking and coordinating coalition activities, building out lists of impacted groups for outreach, and developing effective messengers.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by TWS (including, but not limited to, finance, human resources, and legal) to maintain a compliant and efficient work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate (within 2 years) of an accredited college or university.
  • Exemplary skills in written, online, and oral communication, including comfortable making phone calls, including cold calls, if needed.
  • Knowledgeable and effective at navigating, sharing, and problem-solving from collaborative online platforms such as Zoom or Teams.
  • Some experience organizing or leading focus groups or other deep experience with qualitative research methods.
  • Experience in describing, analyzing, and summarizing qualitative research findings to produce high-quality written materials.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and experienced at managing materials and files in a complex project.
  • Able to work to deadlines, take initiative, and engage in creative problem-solving with minimal supervision when necessary.
